100th Day of School Goldfish Project

Being a busy mom and writer, juggling projects is not unchartered territory. I vaguely remembered my son mentioning that his class was celebrating the 100th day of school with a party and a project...but I forgot to put the project in my Cozi calendar. Panic sets into my home the night before the project was due!

Pinterest being my go-to source showcased an amazing display of Pinterest Perfect ideas (all if which would require a trip to the craft store...too late for that.) I pillaged through my desk and craft supplies. I have a lot of 'things' but not 100 of those 'things.' Not nearly 100 paperclips, not nearly 80 crayons, I couldn't even scrape up 100 pennies. Who saves pennies anymore??

I thought of m&m's or candy, but what 6 year old could I trust NOT to eat the project on the bus?!...... Grrrrreat. I had absolutely NO time to get to the store and back, let my kid do the project (yes, this mom doesn't wait till after bedtime and then stealthily do the project myself). This was something that I need to whip up on the fly.

I raided the pantry. Pretzel Goldfish...Yay! This will work.

I enlisted my son to start counting out 100 fish and put them in a bowl....this afforded me enough time to cut out a fishbowl from a used Amazon box. And no, I would not let my son cut it out...come on, I used a razor blade. Slapped (no joke) some blue paint on it, stuck it under the hairdryer while thinking...this might actually work!!

With the paint barely dry, my son counted and glued on the fish, painted in some sea grass, even embellished it with some pretty old stale almonds I found. I hot glued it on to some construction paper, he gave it a title and a signature as it set drying while I tucked the kids in bed. Yes, as if by magic!!

And there you go, 100 fish swimming peacefully in a fishbowl 100th day of school craft project done, all in about 30 minutes.

TIP: Don't assume you have 100 of anything, count them out first before you start gluing, what may look like 100 paperclips, may only be 76...just sayin....

Goldfish, although not strikingly original, does make for a fun fish bowl project.

Step 1. Count 100 fish to make sure you have enough.

Step 2. Cut out some cardboard In the shape of a circle and cut the two sides of the circle (wait, a circle doesn't have any sides...(praising my 1st grade teacher right now, may she rest in peace knowing I paid attention that day). Use one of the cardboard scraps for the lip of the bowl. Paint the bowl any color blue with acrylic paint and white for the lip.

Step 3. Have your child count groups of 10 so he/she can practice counting in groups.

Step 4. The fun part! Glue the fishies on.

Step 5. Give your masterpiece a title and don't forget to sign it.

***Step 6. Don't let your kid forget it at home!!

Have fun! Thanks for stopping by!
